How do I prevent card-present fraud?
This kind of fraud is when the customer and the payment card are physically present, but the card may be stolen, tampered with or in some other way non-compliant. These days card-present fraud is not that common as the industry has put a number of security features in place on credit cards and debit cards (such as holograms, Chip and PIN), it is however essential that you continue to take every step to protect yourself
If you see suspicious activity, and you suspect there may be a fraud attempt happening, you can request photo ID from the customer to confirm their name matches the card. If the customer offers an ID that does not match the name on the card you should decline the transaction. You should also look at the card to see if it looks and feels real (e.g. embossed numbers, holograms).
New Card Verification Method for Ingenico terminals
If you have an Ingenico terminal with Tyl, you have access to an additional security feature available to reduce the risk of card-present fraud. By performing a card validity check (under Main Menu, Services and Card Validity Check), you can perform a status check against the card which will tell you if the card is valid, and no authorisation charges apply.
