The African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) is just one worthy recipient of the funding we provide.
Targeting persistent health inequalities
ACLT is an award-winning charity committed to providing hope to patients living with blood cancer and other illnesses for which a matched donor (stem cell, blood or organ) is needed to save a patient’s life. It’s driven by the belief that no one should die waiting for a donor to become available.
Through its work, the charity improves the odds of finding matches by registering as many potential donors as possible from all ethnicities, but with a focus on the African and Caribbean communities. That’s because there is an extreme shortage of African and Caribbean donors.
Black people typically come later to diagnosis, are less likely to register as donors and are less likely to access palliative care services than members of other communities. Cultural, religious and social factors all affect donation rates and treatment among black people.
ACLT works to dispel the wide range of myths, fears and taboos that fuel many black people’s reticence to donate. It does this through face-to-face communication, providing information in print and online, and targeted educational awareness talks and presentations.
By providing information at cultural events, music concerts, comedy shows and schools, it aims to overcome some of the issues that have led to traditional public education campaigns struggling to increase donation levels.
